Ignition Timing: Inspection

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Inspection

  1. WARM UP ENGINE 

    Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

  2. CHECK IDLE SPEED (See  INSPECTION   ) 
  3. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT 

    Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the black-white service wire of the engine wire as shown in Fig 1.

  4. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING 
    1. Using SST, connect terminals to TC and CG of the DLC3.

      HINT:

      After engine rpm is kept at 900 - 1,500 rpm for 5 seconds, check that it returns to idle speed.

    2. Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.

      Ignition timing: 8 to 12° BTDC @ idle

    4. Remove the SST from the DLC3.
  5. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING 

    Ignition timing: 5 to 15° BTDC @ idle 

    HINT:

    The timing mark moves in a range between 5 and 15°.

  6. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT 
RENDER: 1.0x
