Inspection Procedure
HINT:
When using the hand-held tester, start the inspection from step 1. Otherwise, start from step 2.
- Check stop light switch using hand-held tester.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON and push the hand-held tester main switch ON.
CHECK:
Select the item "STOP LIGHT SW" in the DATA LIST and read the displayed value.
OK:
ON: Brake pedal depressed
OFF: Brake pedal released
- OK : Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
- NG : Go to next step.
- Check operation of stop light.
CHECK:
Check that the stop light turns on when the brake pedal is depressed, and turns off when the brake pedal is released.
- NG : Check stop light system (See INSPECTION ).
- OK : Go to next step.
- Measure voltage between terminal STP of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM with the connectors being connected.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminal STP of the ECM connector and body ground when the brake pedal is depressed and released.

OK:
BRAKE PEDAL CONDITIONBrake Pedal Condition Specified Condition Depressed 10 to 14V Released Below 1 V
- OK : Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
- NG : Go to next step.
- Measure voltage between terminal ST1- of ECM connector and body ground.
PREPARATION:
- Remove the ECM with the connectors being connected.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
CHECK:
Measure the voltage between terminal ST1- of the ECM connector and body ground when the brake pedal is depressed and released.

OK:
BRAKE PEDAL CONDITIONBrake Pedal Condition Specified Condition Depressed Below 1 V Released 10 to 14V
- OK : Proceed to next circuit inspection shown in problem symptoms table (See PROBLEM SYMPTOMS TABLE ).
- NG : Go to next step.
- Check wire harness and connector between terminal STP of ECM and stop light switch, and terminal ST1- of ECM and stop light switch (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE
).
- NG : Repair or replace harness or connector.
- OK : Check and replace ECM (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).
