Removal & Installation: Disassembly

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Disassembly

  1. Remove inboard joint boot clamps. See Fig 2-Fig 3 . Separate inboard joint boot from joint assembly. Remove old grease from inboard joint.
  2. Paint alignment marks on inboard and outboard joints. Remove inboard joint from outboard joint shaft. Using snap ring expander, remove inner shaft snap ring. Paint alignment marks on outboard joint shaft and tripod. DO NOT punch marks.
  3. Using a brass bar and a hammer, remove tripod from outboard shaft assembly. DO NOT tap roller. On FWD models equipped with 1ZZ-FE engine, remove inner snap ring, inboard joint boot clamps and inboard joint boot.
  4. On FWD models equipped with 1ZZ-FE engine and FWD models equipped with 2ZZ-GE engine with manual transaxle, remove right axle shaft damper clamp. Remove damper. See Fig 2 and Fig 3 .
  5. On AWD models and FWD models equipped with 2ZZ-GE engine, remove outboard joint boot clamps and boot. Remove old grease from outboard joint.
  6. On all models, remove axle shaft hole snap ring. See Fig 2. On FWD models, remove left and right axle shaft dust covers. On AWD models, use bearing remover and press to remove left axle shaft dust cover.
  7. Remove right axle hole snap ring. Use Rear Axle Shaft Bearing Remover (SST 09527-10011) or equivalent and press to remove axle shaft bearing. Remove bearing bracket hole snap ring. See Fig 1.
  8. On FWD models with 2ZZ-GE engine, remove axle shaft bearing snap ring on right axle. Remove bearing case from inboard joint. See Fig 3. Remove dust cover and inner right axle shaft snap ring. Remove axle shaft bearing from bearing case and axle shaft bearing snap ring.
