Removal & Installation: CAMRY: Installation

2004 Toyota Matrix XR, FWD, StandardSECTION Installation

NOTE: Do not damage oil seal and boot.
  1. Coat spline of left inboard joint assembly with automatic transaxle fluid. Align shaft splines and install left axle shaft assembly with brass bar and hammer. Ensure that snap ring is set with opening side facing downward and be careful to not damage oil seal. Move axle shaft assembly while keeping it level.
  2. Using screwdriver, install new right axle shaft bearing bracket hole snap ring. Install bolt. See Figure. Tighten bolt to proper specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ .
  3. NOTE: If holes of cotter pin are not aligned, tighten nut further to 60 degrees.
  4. Install left axle shaft to left axle assembly. Be careful not to damage outboard joint boot. On models equipped with ABS, be careful not to damage speed sensor rotor. On all models, install left lower ball joint assembly to left lower control arm with bolt and 2 nuts. Tighten to proper specifications.
  5. Install left tie rod to steering knuckle with nut. Tighten to proper specification. Install new cotter pin. On models equipped with ABS, install left speed sensor wire and flexible hose to shock absorber with bolt. Tighten to specification. Install sensor wire clamp. Install left speed sensor to steering knuckle with bolt. Tighten to specification. Be careful not to damage speed sensor. Prevent foreign matter from being attached to sensor. DO NOT twist sensor wire when installing sensor. See Figure.
  6. On all models, install left front stabilizer link with nut. Tighten to specifications. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ . If ball joint turns together with nut, use a hexagon wrench (6 mm) to hold stud. Install new left axle hub nut. Tighten to specification. Using chisel and hammer, stake left hub nut.
  7. Install front wheel. Fill with appropriate transaxle fluid, and inspect fluid level. Inspect and adjust front wheel alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in WHEEL ALIGNMENT. On models equipped with ABS, check ABS speed sensor signal.
