Steering Column: Reassembly

2004 Toyota Celica GT, StandardSECTION Reassembly

CAUTION: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. Coat parts indicated by arrows with molybdenum disulfide lithium base grease  . See Figure or Figure .
  2. Install main shaft assembly  .
    1. Non-tilt steering column:

      Install the compression spring and spring retainer.

    2. Tilt steering column:

      Install the inner race, upper bearing inner race seat, compression spring and spring retainer.

    3. Install a new retaining ring to the main shaft assembly.
    4. Install the washer of SST to the main shaft assembly.
    5. Install SST to the main shaft assembly, as shown in Fig 1.

    6. Using SST, push down the retaining ring until it fits into the shaft groove and install the main shaft assembly.
    NOTE: Do not bend the universal Joint of the shaft assembly more than 15°.

    Hold the main shaft assembly with your hand so that it does not rotate.

  3. Install main shaft stopper  .
  4. Tilt steering column: install steering column housing support  .
    1. Install the 2 new tilt No.1 stopper with the steering column housing support.
    2. Install 4 new Torx bolts.

      Torque: 19 N.m (195 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf) 

  5. Non-tilt steering column: install column upper tube with main shaft assembly  .
    1. Install the column upper tube with the main shaft assembly to the column tube assembly.
    2. Install 4 new Torx bolts.

      Torque: 19 N.m (195 kgf.cm, 14 ft.lbf) 

  6. Tilt steering column: installing steering column housing with main shaft assembly  .
    1. Install the steering column housing with the main shaft assembly into the column tube assembly.
    2. Install the tilt spring and spring guide.
    3. Using a vise to hold the steering column housing and steering column housing support.
    4. Temporarily install 2 new pivot pins.

    5. Using a punch and a hammer, tap in the pivot pin.
    6. Using a pin punch, stake on 3 places evenly around the hole as shown in Fig 3.

  7. Install turn signal bracket  .

    Install the turn signal bracket with 2 new Torx screws.

    Torque: 7.5 N.m (75 kgf.cm, 65 in.lbf)
