Introduction
Some customers may experience a condition where functions in the tail gate may operate abnormally. An updated back door wire harness has been made available to improve this condition.
Applicable Vehicles
^ 1998 - 2007 model year Land Cruiser vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VINs shown below.

Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Required Tools & Equipment
Repair Procedure

1. Remove the rear mat set plate.
A. Remove the 5 screws.
B. Using the plastic pry tool, remove the rear mat set plate.

2. Remove the back door trim by inserting the plastic pry tool between the door and door trim to pry out.

3. Remove the rear mat by removing the 2 plastic bezel pieces.
4. Remove the rear LH seat outer belt floor anchor.
Torque: 42 N.m (430 kgf.cm, 31 ft.lbf)
5. Remove the rear door scuff plates.
6. Remove the rear door opening trims.

7. Remove the quarter trim panel LH.
A. Remove the quarter trim jack cover.
B. Using the clip remover, remove the 2 clips.
C. Remove the quarter trim panel LH.
D. Disconnect the connector.

8. Disconnect the white connector.

9. Using the plastic pry tool, loosen the wire harness.

10. Detach the 11 clips holding the harness to the tailgate.
11. Remove the access plate to gain access to the connector for the tail lights.
A. Disconnect the 2 harness connectors.

B. Disconnect the back door courtesy switch.
12. Install the NEW harness and reassemble the panels.
13. Confirm that the tail lights operate normally.
14. Confirm that the Back Door Courtesy Switch (lamp) works properly.
