Axle Shafts: Removal

1994 Toyota Previa LE, 2TZ-FZE, AWDSECTION Removal, Disassembly, Reassembly & Installation
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheel. Remove cotter pin and lock cap. See Fig 1. Apply brakes and remove axle shaft nut from end of axle shaft. Release brakes.
  2. Loosen, but DO NOTΒ  remove, ball joint-to-steering knuckle bolts. Remove cotter pin and nut from tie rod end. Using Tie Rod End Remover (SST 09628-10011), disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.
  3. Paint reference marks on axle shaft flange and differential assembly flange for reassembly reference. DO NOTΒ  use punch to make reference marks. Remove axle shaft flange-to-differential assembly flange bolts/nuts.
  4. Remove ball joint-to-steering knuckle bolts. Pull steering knuckle outward and disconnect axle shaft from steering knuckle. Use care not to damage oil seal, axle shaft boots or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor rotor (if equipped). Remove axle shaft.
