Disassembly (Cressida)

1990 Toyota Tercel Base, 2D Coupe, StandardSECTION Disassembly (Cressida)
  1. Using Rack Housing Stand (09612-00012 ), mount steering gear in vise and remove left and right turn tubes. Loosen lock nuts on tie rod ends, match mark for reassembly and remove tie rod ends. See Fig 1. Remove outer clips and inner clamps and remove rack boots.

  2. Mark rack tie rods for reassembly and using chisel and hammer, unstake claw washers. Remove tie rods using Lock Nut Wrench (09617-14010 and 09612-24014 ) and remove claw washers. Remove inboard rack boot and solenoid valve. Remove steering damper support. The lock nut has left hand threads.
  3. Remove rack guide spring cap lock nut. Remove spring cap. Remove rack guide spring, guide and seat.
  4. Remove dust cover and place match marks on control valve housing and rack. Remove the control valve housing bolts and remove control valve and housing. Remove cylinder end stopper nut using Stopper Nut Wrench (09631-20090 ).
  5. Using Bearing Replacer (09612-10061 ) press out the rack and oil seal. Pull out the steering rack, oil seal and rack end guide from the cylinder. Remove dust cover. Using Bearing Guide Nut Wrench (09631-20060 ), remove bearing guide nut and "O" ring. Tap out control valve using a plastic hammer.
