Wheel Bearings: Front: Installation

1983 Toyota Tercel DX, 2D Hatchback, StandardSECTION Installation
  1. Using a press and bearing installer, press NEW bearing into steering knuckle. Note that there are 2 types of bearings available, KOYO and NSK.
  2. Install bearing inner race (outer side) before installing NEW oil seal. Using seal installer, drive NEW oil seal into steering knuckle.
  3. Apply liquid sealer to disc brake dust cover and steering knuckle. Install dust cover. Install inner races into inner bearing. Using installer, press in inner race until it is tightly against shoulder of hub.
    NOTE: DO NOT interchange inner and outer race when installing.
  4. Using snap ring pliers, install hole snap ring into steering knuckle. Using seal installer, drive NEW oil seal into steering knuckle. Tap in .13" (3.3 mm) from end surface. See Fig 1 .

  5. Using driver, drive NEW dust deflector into steering knuckle. Install steering knuckle with axle hub to lower arm and tighten to 59 ft. lbs. (80 N.m).
  6. Using care not to damage drive shaft boot and oil seal lip, install axle hub to drive shaft. Lower stabilizer bar and assemble steering knuckle to shock absorber lower bracket.
  7. Insert bolts from front side and align marks of camber adjust cam. Tighten bolts to 105 ft. lbs. (143 N.m). Install disc to hub. Install brake caliper to steering knuckle and tighten bolts.
  8. Connect tie rod end to steering knuckle and tighten castle nut. Install cotter pin. Depress brake pedal. Install and tighten bearing lock nut to 137 ft. lbs. (186 N.m). Install adjusting nut cap and cotter pin. Check front wheel alignment.
