Axle Drive Shafts: Front: Removal

1983 Toyota Tercel DX, 2D Hatchback, StandardSECTION Removal
  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove tire and wheel. Remove cotter pin and lock nut cap. Depress brake pedal and loosen bearing lock nut. Remove brake caliper and suspend caliper from frame. Remove brake disc.
  2. Remove cotter pin and nut from tie rod end. Using adapter, disconnect tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
  3. Mark shock absorber lower bracket and camber adjust cam for reassembly reference. Remove bolts and nuts and disconnect the steering knuckle and shock absorber.
  4. Pull off axle hub from drive shaft. Cover boot with cloth to prevent damage. Remove stiffener plate from left side of transaxle assembly and engine.
  5. Using support tool and hammer, tap out front drive shaft. After pulling out shaft, insert retainer.
