Reduction Driven Gear
2002 Subaru Legacy GT Wagon AWD F4-2.5L SOHCSECTION Reduction Driven Gear
A: REMOVAL
1. WITHOUT VTD
1. Remove rear vehicle speed sensor, and separate the transmission case and extension case.

2. Straighten the staked portion, and remove the lock nut.
NOTE: Set the range select lever to "P".

3. Using the ST1 and ST2, extract the reduction driven gear.
ST1 499737000 PULLER

2. WITH VTD
1. Remove the rear vehicle speed sensor, and separate the transmission case and extension case.
2. Remove the rear drive shaft.

3. Straighten the staked portion, and remove the lock nut.
NOTE: Set the range select lever to "P".
4. Using the ST1 and ST2, extract the reduction driven gear.

5. Extract center differential assembly.
B: INSTALLATION
1. WITHOUT VTD

1. Using a plastic hammer, install reduction driven gear assembly and new washer, and tighten new drive pinion lock nut.
NOTE:
^ Set the select lever in the "P" range.
^ After tightening, stake the lock nut securely.
Tightening torque: 100 Nm (10.2 kgf-m, 73.8 ft. lbs.)
2. Combine the transmission case with the extension case, and install rear vehicle speed sensor.
2. WITH VTD
1. Using a plastic hammer, install reduction driven gear assembly.
2. Using a plastic hammer, install center differential.

3. Tighten drive pinion lock nut.
NOTE:
^ Be sure to use a new lock nut and a washer.
^ Set the range select lever in the "P" range.
^ After tightening, stake the lock nut securely.
Tightening torque: 100 Nm (10.2 kgf-m, 73.8 ft. lbs.)
4. Insert the rear drive shaft assembly.
5. Combine the transmission case with the extension case, and install rear vehicle speed sensor.
C: DISASSEMBLY

1. Remove snap ring from reduction driven gear.

2. Using ST, remove ball bearing from reduction driven gear.
ST 498077600 REMOVER

3. Remove snap rings from reduction driven gear. (Legacy 2.5 L US model and 3.0 L model)
D: REASSEMBLY

1. Install snap rings to reduction driven gear. (Legacy 2.5 L US model and 3.0 L model)

2. Using a press, install ball bearing to reduction driven gear.

3. Install snap ring to reduction driven gear.
E: INSPECTION
Check ball bearing and gear for dents or damage.
1. WITHOUT VTD

3. Straighten the staked portion, and remove the lock nut.

5. Extract center differential assembly.
B: INSTALLATION
1. WITHOUT VTD
1. Using a plastic hammer, install reduction driven gear assembly and new washer, and tighten new drive pinion lock nut.
NOTE:
^ Set the select lever in the "P" range.
^ After tightening, stake the lock nut securely.
Tightening torque: 100 Nm (10.2 kgf-m, 73.8 ft. lbs.)
2. Combine the transmission case with the extension case, and install rear vehicle speed sensor.
2. WITH VTD
1. Using a plastic hammer, install reduction driven gear assembly.
2. Using a plastic hammer, install center differential.
3. Tighten drive pinion lock nut.
NOTE:
^ Be sure to use a new lock nut and a washer.
^ Set the range select lever in the "P" range.
^ After tightening, stake the lock nut securely.
Tightening torque: 100 Nm (10.2 kgf-m, 73.8 ft. lbs.)
4. Insert the rear drive shaft assembly.
5. Combine the transmission case with the extension case, and install rear vehicle speed sensor.
C: DISASSEMBLY
1. Remove snap ring from reduction driven gear.
2. Using ST, remove ball bearing from reduction driven gear.

3. Remove snap rings from reduction driven gear. (Legacy 2.5 L US model and 3.0 L model)
D: REASSEMBLY
1. Install snap rings to reduction driven gear. (Legacy 2.5 L US model and 3.0 L model)
2. Using a press, install ball bearing to reduction driven gear.
3. Install snap ring to reduction driven gear.
E: INSPECTION
Check ball bearing and gear for dents or damage.
