Description & Operation

2002 Subaru Forester BaseSECTION Description & Operation

The Mitsubishi generator is a conventional rotating field, 3-phase, self-rectifying type. Four positive and 4 negative diodes are used to rectify current. System is equipped with built-in voltage regulator which controls output voltage and warning light operation.

The on-off operation of transistor Tr1 connects and disconnects the field current flow, providing a constant level of output voltage. See WIRING DIAGRAMSΒ  .

When any of the following problems occur, the charge light will illuminate:

  • No voltage generation: brush wear exceeds specified limits, field coil circuit is broken.
  • Excessive output: output voltage is greater than about 16 volts.
  • Harness is disconnected from generator terminal "B".
  • Harness is disconnected from generator terminal "S". In this case, voltage is slightly greater than specified regulated voltage. However, voltage regulation is still controlled and battery is prevented from being overcharged.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
