Ignition Switch: Description and Operation

1998 Subaru Legacy Brighton Wagon AWD F4-2.2L SOHCSECTION Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION

The ignition key warning system is adopted.
- When driver opens the door with the ignition key in "LOOK" or "ACC" position, warning alarm sounds to warn the driver.

In manual transmission vehicle, two stage steering lock is adopted to improve safety in key operation.
- When turning the ignition key from "ACC" to "LOOK" position, it is necessary to push the key into the key cylinder (arrow 1 in the illustration) and then turn the key to "LOCK" position (arrow 2).

Automatic transmission vehicles are equipped with a key interlock mechanism to prevent erroneous operation.
- Ignition key can be turned to "LOCK" position only when select lever is set to P position.

NOTE: If the key cannot be turned to "LOCK" position although select lever is in P position (because of key interlock system failure), the key interlock system must be canceled by key interlock release lever which is located at the lower side of the steering column.
