Steering Gear: Removal
1998 Subaru Forester BaseSECTION Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support front of vehicle. Remove front wheels. Remove front exhaust pipe assembly.
- Remove cotter pins and tie rod castle nuts. Remove tie rod ends from steering knuckles. Remove crossmember jack-up plate and front stabilizer bar. Disconnect steering gear center fluid pipe.
- Drain power steering fluid by turning steering wheel from lock to lock. Drain power steering fluid from other pipes using same procedure. Place reference marks on steering column "U" joints for reassembly reference. Remove "U" joint lower and upper side clamp bolts.
- Move "U" joint upward. Disconnect pump-to-control valve hydraulic lines. Disconnect upper hydraulic line and lower hydraulic line from control valve respectively.
- Remove lower control valve-to-rack housing hydraulic pipe and upper control valve-to-rack housing pipe respectively. Remove steering gear-to-crossmember bolts. Remove steering gear.
