Problem Symptoms Table

2008 Scion xD AutomaticSECTION Problem Symptoms Table

Use the table below to help determine the cause of a problem. The likely causes of the problem are indicated in descending order. Check each suspected area in order. Repair or replace faulty parts or perform adjustments as necessary.

NOTE: When replacing the brake actuator assembly, sensor, etc., turn the ignition switch to OFF.

HINT:

  • Inspect the fuse and relay before investigating the suspected areas as shown in the table below.
  • Inspect each suspected area in order for the corresponding symptom.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
