Axle Shaft Deflector Ring Replacement
2000 Saturn SC1 L4-1.9L SOHC VIN 8SECTION Axle Shaft Deflector Ring Replacement
TOOLS REQUIRED
- J44280-1,-2 Axle Seal Deflector Ring Installer
- SA9112T Axle Seal Protector
NOTICE: The axle shaft deflector ring is designed to aid the transaxle seal from dirt and water intrusion. Deflector rings are installed on left and intermediate axle shafts, and rotate around the third lip of the transaxle seals. Improperly installed deflector rings may cause premature failure of transaxle seals, deflector rings, and axle shafts. Special tools J44280-1 and J44280-2 are required to properly install the deflector rings.
IMPORTANT: If an axle shaft deflector ring is removed, a new deflector ring must be installed. Do not re-use axle shaft deflector rings that have been previously installed. If an axle shaft deflector ring is damaged, it should be replaced. Do not attempt to repair damaged deflector rings.
REMOVAL
1. Remove axle assembly(s) from vehicle. Refer to "Axle Shaft" or "Intermediate Axle Shaft Removal" procedures.

2. Clamp axle shaft assembly in a vice. Use soft metal or wood between vice jaws to protect the shaft.

IMPORTANT: Do not damage the smooth portion of the axle shaft assembly(s). The transaxle seal rides upon the smooth portion, if damaged, a leak can occur.

3. Remove axle shaft deflector ring by prying off with a screwdriver, or gently tap off with a soft mallet.
4. Discard axle shaft deflector ring. A new axle shaft deflector ring will be required for installation.
LEFT AXLE SHAFT DEFLECTOR RING INSTALLATION

1. Inspect axle shaft assembly for any damage, repair as necessary.
2. Thoroughly clean area that deflector ring is to be installed upon.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to notice which direction the deflector ring is installed. Cupped end of deflector ring should face towards the transaxle seal.
3. Slide deflector ring onto drive axle shaft assembly by hand.
IMPORTANT: The deflector ring must be fully seated against the tri-pot housing. If not fully seated, the deflector ring may cause premature failure to the transaxle seal.
4. Use special tool J44280-2 to install axle deflector ring remainder of the way. The deflector ring should bottom out against the tri-pot housing.

5. Install drive axle assembly into vehicle. Refer to "Drive Axle Installation" procedure.
INTERMEDIATE AXLE SHAFT DEFLECTOR RING INSTALLATION
1. Inspect axle shaft for damage, repair as necessary.
2. Throughly clean area that deflector ring is to be installed upon.

3. Slide deflector ring onto intermediate axle shaft by hand, should not require excessive force.
IMPORTANT: Be sure to notice which direction the deflector ring is installed. Cupped end of deflector ring should face towards the transaxle seal.
4. Use special tool J44280-1 to install the deflector ring to the required distance. Special tool J44280-1 will bottom out against the top of the axle shaft once the deflector ring is in the proper location.

NOTICE: The required distance from the top of the intermediate axle shaft to the bottom of the deflector ring cup is 74.30 mm. If special tool J44280-1 is not used, damage may result to the transaxle seal, deflector ring, or axle shaft.

5. Install intermediate axle shaft assembly into vehicle. Refer to "Intermediate Axle Shaft Installation" procedure. (Left axle shaft shown, intermediate axle shaft is similar.)
