Steering Gear: Removal

NOTE:
Rotating steering wheel while disconnected from steering gear may cause damage to SIR coil.
- From inside of vehicle, remove intermediate shaft-to-steering gear pinch bolt, and disconnect shaft. On vehicles equipped with L81 engines, remove rear exhaust manifold pipe heat shield. For both engine types, Remove rear transaxle mount through-bolt and transaxle mount-to-frame bolt.
- Place approved drain container under pressure and return hose at steering gear. Remove hose from steering gear, and allow system to drain. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Support opposite end of vehicle from which components will be removed. Remove front wheels.
- Remove right front lower splash shield. Disconnect O2 sensor electrical connection. On vehicles equipped with L61 engines, remove O2 sensor clamp-to-underbody nut. On vehicles equipped with L81 engines, remove O2 sensor from exhaust manifold pipe. On vehicles equipped L61 engine and manual transmission, and vehicles equipped with L81 engines, remove exhaust manifold pipe. For all vehicle types, remove remaining rear transaxle mount-to-frame bolts, and remove rear transaxle mount.
- While holding tie rod end ball stud from turning, remove tie rod end nut, and discard. Using Tie Rod Separator (SA91100C), or equivalent, separate tie rod end from knuckle. On vehicles equipped L61 engine and manual transmission, remove cradle-to-shifter link pivot pin clip. On all vehicle types, remove steering gear-to-frame assembly bolts. On vehicles equipped with L61 engines and automatic transaxle, remove steering gear heat shield.
- On all vehicle types, while holding stabilizer link ball stud, remove stabilizer bar link-to-strut assembly nut. Remove front suspension support assemblies. Loosen remaining from-to-body attachment fasteners until there is enough clearance to remove steering gear through driver-side wheel opening. Remove steering gear.
