Axle Shafts: Removal

  1. With vehicle on ground, have assistant depress brake pedal. Remove cotter pin and axle shaft nut. Raise and support vehicle with hoist. Remove front wheel assemblies.
  2. Remove tie rod end nut and discard. Separate tie rod end from steering knuckle using Tie Rod Separator (SA91100C).
    NOTE: Before removing left axle shaft or intermediate shaft, drain transaxle fluid.
  3. Remove lower control arm to steering knuckle nut and bolt. Separate lower control arm from knuckle.
  4. CAUTION: Vehicles equipped with ABS have a speed sensor ring located on outer CV joint. To prevent damage to ABS sensor, separate lower control arm from steering knuckle using ball joint separator.
  5. Support axle shaft while pulling knuckle and strut assembly away from vehicle. Pull outer end of axle out of hub. Using a pry bar, remove axle shaft from transaxle. Remove shaft retaining ring from end of axle shaft or stub shaft and discard.
