Retrieving Diagnostic Trouble Codes
Connect scan tool to DLC. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Using scan tool, attempt to establish communication with Body Control Module (BCM). Check for any DTCs stored in BCM memory which may lead to misdiagnosis of instrument cluster. If scan tool does not communicate with BCM, see appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. If any instrument cluster related DTCs are stored in BCM memory, perform appropriate test. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no instrument cluster related DTCs exist in BCM memory, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEX table under SYSTEM TESTS.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
