Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check

2000 Saturn LS AutomaticSECTION Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check
NOTE: Instrument cluster diagnostic system check is designed to locate an instrument cluster fault. For best results, follow the procedure and see appropriate INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTROL SIGNALS table to repair appropriate symptom in SYSTEM TESTS.
  1. Turn ignition on while observing instrument cluster. If instrument cluster powers up and performs the 3 second telltale indicator ON test, go to next step. If instrument cluster does not power up and does not perform the 3 second telltale indicator ON test, check and repair power and ground circuits as necessary. See POWER DISTRIBUTION and GROUND DISTRIBUTION articles in WIRING DIAGRAMS.
  2. If one specific instrument cluster function does not operate, repair by symptom. See SYMPTOM INDEXΒ  table under SYSTEM TESTS. If more than one instrument cluster function does not operate, go to next step.
  3. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTROL SIGNALS ("L" SERIES)Β  or INSTRUMENT CLUSTER CONTROL SIGNALS ("S" SERIES)Β  tables to identify BCM and PCM functions. If BCM and/or PCM controlled instrument cluster functions are inoperative, repair BCM or PCM communications concern. See appropriate BODY CONTROL MODULES article. If all BCM and PCM controlled instrument cluster functions operate, go to next step.
  4. Connect scan tool to DLC. Using scan tool, perform gauges and telltale indicators test. If gauges and telltale indicators operate when commanded, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections. If DRL or high beam telltale indicators do not illuminate when commanded on, check DRL or high beam telltale bulbs. If DRL and high beam telltale bulbs are okay, replace instrument cluster. If any other gauge and/or telltale indicator does not operate when commanded, replace instrument cluster.
