DTC 17 - Passenger-Side Deployment Loop Open: Description

1997 Saturn SC1 AutomaticSECTION Description

When ignition switch is turned ON, SDM performs tests to diagnose critical malfunctions within itself. Next, SDM measures IGNITION 1, VLR and deployment loop voltages to make sure they are within normal ranges. SDM proceeds with CURRENT SOURCE diagnostics. PASSENGER SIDE LO terminal No. A4 is grounded through a resistor and passenger current source connected to PASSENGER SIDE HI terminal No. A1 allows a known amount of current to flow. After CURRENT SOURCE diagnostics are complete, SDM removes low resistance ground from PASSENGER SIDE LO and switches driver current source at PASSENGER SIDE HI. SDM then measures voltage at PASSENGER SIDE HI and PASSENGER SIDE LO during CONTINUOUS MONITORING. By monitoring voltage difference between PASSENGER SIDE HI and PASSENGER SIDE LO SDM calculates combined resistance of passenger-side inflator module, harness wiring circuits 1403 and 1404 and connector terminal contact.
