Power Steering Pump R & I: Removal

1995 Saturn SL1 AutomaticSECTION Removal
  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove pump reservoir cap. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Place drain pan under pressure and return hose fittings at steering gear. Disconnect hoses from steering gear and allow system to drain.
  2. DO NOTΒ  rotate steering wheel, as fluid will be forced out of steering gear fittings. Using appropriate wrench, rotate drive belt tensioner to relieve belt tension, and then remove drive belt from pump pulley. On Double Overhead Cam (DOHC), remove steering pump-to-intake manifold bracket and steering pump-to-engine bracket.
  3. On all vehicles, while supporting pump, remove main pump bracket-to-engine bolts. Raise pump up as far as necessary, and then disconnect Electronic Variable Orifice (EVO) electrical connector. Remove pump with hoses attached. Disconnect hoses from pump.
