Inner Tie Rod R & I: Removal

1994 Saturn SL2 AutomaticSECTION Removal
  1. Raise and support vehicle on hoist. Remove front wheels. Loosen tie rod end-to-inner tie rod jam nut (adjusting nut). Remove steering gear. See STEERING GEAR R & IΒ  .
  2. Unscrew tie rod end from inner tie rod. Remove jam nut. Remove boot clamps and boot. Slide shock damper off inner tie rod, toward steering gear.
    CAUTION: If rack is not prevented from rotating when loosening or tightening inner tie rod, steering gear will be damaged.
  3. If removing right inner tie rod, remove left boot for access to rack teeth. Place a shop towel over rack teeth, and position appropriate wrench over shop towel to rigidly hold and support rack. See Figure . While holding rack, remove inner tie rod with wrench.
