Intermediate Drive Axle

FRONT INTERMEDIATE DRIVE SHAFT
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove right side drive axle as described under ``Drive Axle, Replace.''
3. On DOHC engine models, remove intermediate shaft support bracket to intake manifold bracket fasteners.
4. On all models, remove starter motor bracket to intermediate shaft bracket fastener.
5. Remove intermediate shaft support bracket to engine block fasteners.
6. Remove intermediate drive assembly from vehicle.
INSTALLATION

1. Install transaxle seal protector tool No. SA91112T or equivalent, Fig. 10.
2. Install intermediate driveshaft into transaxle. Do not contact oil seal with shaft splines. The splines can damage oil seal.
3. After intermediate driveshaft splines have safely passed transaxle oil seal, remove seal protector and fully seat intermediate driveshaft into transaxle.
4. Install intermediate driveshaft to engine block. Torque bolts to 40 lb ft
5. On DOHC engine models, install intermediate shaft support bracket to intake manifold bracket. Torque bolts to 33 lb ft
6. On all models, install starter motor bracket to intermediate shaft bracket. Torque bolts to 22 lb ft
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove right side drive axle as described under ``Drive Axle, Replace.''
3. On DOHC engine models, remove intermediate shaft support bracket to intake manifold bracket fasteners.
4. On all models, remove starter motor bracket to intermediate shaft bracket fastener.
5. Remove intermediate shaft support bracket to engine block fasteners.
6. Remove intermediate drive assembly from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
Fig. 10 Transaxle Seal Protector Installed In Transaxle:
1. Install transaxle seal protector tool No. SA91112T or equivalent, Fig. 10.
2. Install intermediate driveshaft into transaxle. Do not contact oil seal with shaft splines. The splines can damage oil seal.
3. After intermediate driveshaft splines have safely passed transaxle oil seal, remove seal protector and fully seat intermediate driveshaft into transaxle.
4. Install intermediate driveshaft to engine block. Torque bolts to 40 lb ft
5. On DOHC engine models, install intermediate shaft support bracket to intake manifold bracket. Torque bolts to 33 lb ft
6. On all models, install starter motor bracket to intermediate shaft bracket. Torque bolts to 22 lb ft
