Steering Knuckle & Hub Assembly: Installation
1992 Saturn SL2 StandardSECTION Installation
- Position steering knuckle onto axle shaft. Install hub washer and new axle nut, but DO NOT tighten. Connect tie rod end to steering knuckle. Thoroughly clean and lubricate tie rod end stud threads. DO NOT lubricate unthreaded portion of stud. Install castle nut, but DO NOT tighten.
- Attach steering knuckle to lower strut mount with nuts and bolts, but DO NOT tighten. Connect tie rod end to steering knuckle. Thoroughly clean and lubricate tie rod end stud threads. DO NOT lubricate unthreaded portion of stud.
- Install and tighten tie rod end castle nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONSΒ table at end of article. Install new cotter pin. Push and hold lower end of strut inward (toward center of vehicle). With strut in this position, tighten strut-to-steering knuckle nuts to specification.
- Tighten ball joint castle nut to specification. Install new cotter pin. Install rotor. Install caliper mount and caliper assembly onto steering knuckle. Tighten caliper mount bolts to specification. Connect ABS wheel speed sensor connector (if equipped).
- While applying brakes, tighten axle nut to specification. Remove rust and corrosion from wheel-to-brake rotor mounting surfaces. Install front wheel. Check front wheel alignment. See SPECIFICATIONS & PROCEDURES article in the WHEEL ALIGNMENT Section.
