Safety Warning
DIY auto repair can cause serious injury, fire, or vehicle damage. These guides are for informational purposes only. Always follow OEM torque specs, wear PPE, and consult a certified mechanic if you are unsure. You are solely responsible for your safety.
Procedure 2: Deployment Outside Vehicle
Use this procedure if scrapping a vehicle with live air bag, but a problem in electrical system prevents deployment with air bag still installed in vehicle. Also use this procedure if vehicle is being returned to service or if PROCEDURE 1 was unsuccessful.
- Before proceeding, follow air bag service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONSΒ . Disable SIR system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEMΒ . Remove inflator module. See INFLATOR MODULEΒ under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Using Universal Deployment Harness (SA 9207Z), connect universal deployment harness leads together. Universal deployment harness leads should remain connected until inflator module is ready to be deployed.
- Connect appropriate universal deployment harness pigtail adapter to universal deployment harness connector. Place inflator module face (trim cover) facing upward on a flat surface, in a remote area such as a parking lot or field. Ensure no loose or flammable objects are within a 6-foot diameter of deployment area.NOTE: Ensure universal deployment harness connector is fully seated into inflator module connector. Failure to fully seat connector may leave shorting bar (located in inflator module connector) active and can result in non-deployment of inflator module.
- Connect inflator module connector to universal deployment harness pigtail adapter. Stretch universal deployment harness from inflator module to its full length. Ensure all personnel are at least 20 feet away from inflator module.
- Separate universal deployment leads that were connected together in step 2). Connect universal deployment harness wires to a 12-volt battery. Inflator module should deploy. Disconnect universal deployment harness from 12-volt battery.
- Connect universal deployment harness leads together. If air bag did not deploy, inflator module is faulty. DO NOT dispose of inflator module at normal refuse locations. Contact vehicle manufacturer for proper disposal instructions.
- If air bag deployed, let inflator module cool off and allow dust to settle at least 10 minutes before approaching inflator module. Wearing safety glasses and gloves, disconnect universal deployment harness from inflator. Dispose of deployed inflator module as would any other part. Wash hands with mild soap and water.
