1999 Saab 9-3 Base, 2D Hatchback, AutomaticSECTION Scrapped Vehicle
NOTE: Some vehicles being scrapped may have an undeployed air bags and/or belt tensioners. When scrapping a vehicle with an undeployed air bag or belt tensioner, deploy before scrapping vehicle.
  1. Before proceeding, follow service precautions. See SERVICE PRECAUTIONSΒ  . Ensure vehicle is located outside at least 35 feet away from other vehicles and people. Disconnect negative battery cable.
  2. Ensure that air bag modules are firmly mounted to steering wheel, instrument panel and seats. Verify there are no loose objects in front seats or on dashboard. Remove bottom steering column cover.
  3. Disconnect Orange 2-pin steering column connector. Connect Detonating Device (84 71 104) to Cable (86 11 477). Connect cable to Orange connector.
  4. On passenger-side air bag, remove glove box. Disconnect electrical connector at back of air bag. Connect detonating device into Cable (86 11 469) and plug cable into 2-pin air bag connector.
  5. Verify all windows are in the up position. Run cable through door opening and close vehicle doors. Place a battery on the ground about 35 feet away from vehicle. Connect detonating device (84 711 04) to battery. Verify no one is close to vehicle.
  6. Press button and detonate air bag. An explosion will be heard and white smoke will be visible inside vehicle. Disconnect detonating device from battery as soon as air bag detonates. Because of heat, wait 30 minutes before touching deployed air bag.
  7. On seat belt pretensioners, push seat forward and fold down backrest. Remove covers from scuff plates. Unscrew and remove scuff plates. Remove screws holding B-pillar trim. Remove cover, then detach seat belt guide from B-pillar and remove B-pillar trim. Remove plastic protector from belt tensioner.
  8. Unplug electrical connector from belt pretensioner and connect detonator cable (86 11 469). Refit upper seat belt guide. Check that belt moves freely and can retract 7" (180 mm). Verify all windows are up. Run cable through door opening and close door. Place a battery on the ground about 35 feet away from vehicle. Connect detonation device (84 711 04) to battery.
  9. Press button and detonate belt tensioner.
  10. On side air bags loosen and remove driver or passenger seat mounting bolts and position seat to gain access to 29-pin electrical connector.
  11. Disconnect 29-pin electrical connector and install side air bag detonating cable (86 12 343) to seat electrical connector. Reinstall seat.
  12. Run cable out door opening. Verify all windows are up and close all doors. Place a battery on ground 35 feet from vehicle. Connect air bag detonating cable to detonating device (84 711 04) and attach detonating device to battery. Detonate side air bag. An explosion will be heard and white smoke will be seen inside vehicle. Disconnect detonating device from battery as soon as air bag is detonated. Wait at least 30 minutes before working on vehicle to give air bag time to cool down.
  13. Repeat procedure for remaining side air bag.
