Installation Procedure

2006 Pontiac G6 GTP, 2D Coupe, StandardSECTION Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice .
  3. Install the power steering gear mounting bolts.

    Tighten:Β  Tighten the power steering gear mounting bolts to 95 N.m (70 lb ft).

  4. Install the left stabilizer shaft insulator. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Insulator Replacement .

  6. Install the power steering pressure and return hoses (1, 2) to the power steering gear.

    Tighten:Β  Tighten the power steering pressure and return hoses to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

  7. If equipped, connect the variable effort steering electrical connector.

  9. Install the outer tie rod (1) to the steering knuckles.
  10. Install the outer tie rod retaining nuts.

    Tighten:Β  Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nuts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft) plus an additional 180 degrees.

  12. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  13. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.

    Tighten:Β  Tighten the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt to 47 N.m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the power steering gear heatshield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield ReplacementΒ .
  15. Install the tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  16. Lower the vehicle.

  18. Remove the J 42640Β  from the steering column.
  19. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System BleedingΒ .
  20. Check the power steering system for leaks.
  21. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
