1990 Pontiac Grand Prix STE, 3.1 VSECTION Code A040: Rear Enable Relay Contacts Shorted To Battery

When rear enable relay control is open, the rear enable relay is de-energized. This blocks voltage application to the rear solenoid and solenoid control. To set Code A040, the following conditions must occur.

  • Rear enable relay control does not energize.
  • Anti-lock brake controller senses voltage at terminal 1D12, at both terminals 1C14 and 1C15.

NOTE: Test numbers refer to test numbers on diagnostic chart.
  1. If Code A039 is set, replace anti-lock brake controller.
  2. Isolates short to battery in wire harness or anti-lock brake controller.
  3. Isolates a short to battery in circuit No. 961, or a defective rear enable relay.
  4. If Code A040 is consistent, the anti-lock brake controller has internal malfunction.
