Transaxle Disassembly

1990 Pontiac Grand Prix STE, 3.1 VSECTION Transaxle Disassembly
  1. Remove shift lever and selector lever bracket from transaxle. DO NOTΒ  allow shift lever to move during removal of nut. Hold shift lever at shift cable mounting stud. Remove fluid level indicator and speedometer signal assembly.
  2. Remove clutch release bearing. Puncture detent holder cover in middle and pry it off. Remove bolts, detent holder, springs and interlock pins. Remove detent balls, and pry loose reverse shift rail bushing.
  3. Remove shift shaft detent snap ring and cover. Remove screw, outer spring seat, 5th-reverse bias spring and inner spring seat. Shift transaxle to Neutral position.
  4. Place transaxle on bench with clutch housing facing upward. Remove bolts retaining clutch housing to transaxle case. Remove clutch housing. Remove differential gear assembly from case. Remove magnet from bottom of case. Remove output shaft bearing. Remove pin from shift shaft assembly.
  5. Remove shift shaft, rollers and pin. Remove 3rd-4th bias spring, shift lever and reverse lever. See Figure and Figure . Push 3rd-4th gear shift rail and reverse gear shift rail in to engage transaxle into 4th and Reverse gears. Ensure gears are engaged to lock mainshaft. Remove end plate retaining bolts and end plate. Remove oil slinger washer, selective shim and retainer.
  6. Using Bearing Retainer Hex Socket (J-36031), remove retainers, input shaft, output shaft and gear cluster. Shift transaxle to Neutral position. Place Disassembly Pallet (J-36182-1) and Adapters (J-36182-2) on hydraulic press bed. See Fig 1 .
  7. Position transaxle case onto Disassembly Pallet (J-36182-1). Align shift rail and shaft pilots to fixture. Position Gear Cluster Remover (J-36185) on support shaft bearings and pilots. See Fig 1 . Using press, separate shaft and gear cluster from transaxle case.
  8. Remove 1st-2nd shift rail assembly and lock pin. See Figure . Remove 3rd-4th shift rail assembly. Remove 5th gear shift rail assembly. Remove reverse shift rail assembly, shift gate and gear disengage roller. See Figure .
