Subject: SHIM SEAT BELT RETRACTOR PLUNGER
1986-87 SUNBIRD AND GRAND AM MODELS
Some 1986-87 Sunbird and Grand Am vehicles may exhibit an abrasion/wear mark and/or corrosion on the inside of the door panel where the seat belt retractor comfort plunger contacts the door when closed. This condition develops when the paint on the door is worn away due to vibration of the door relative to the plunger (dust or other materials may accelerate the condition by acting as an abrasive).
This condition can be corrected by:
1. Repair the abraded or corroded area as required.

2. Install shim, Part Number 20339618, using screw Part Number 11509608 or equivalent, to door as shown in Figure 1. Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
3. Check door operation and adjust door striker as necessary.
4. In cases where door striker adjustment causes unsatisfactory operation or appearance, it may be necessary to replace the seat belt retractor with one available through GMSPO.
