Rear Unit End Play Check

1987 Pontiac Grand Prix LE, 5.0 HSECTION Rear Unit End Play Check
  1. Loosen adjusting screw on Output Shaft Support (J-25013-5) and push output shaft fully downward. Mount dial indicator and extension on transmission case as shown in Fig 1 . Position indicator button on output shaft. DO NOTΒ  clamp indicator to any machined surface.
  2. Zero dial indicator. Move output shaft upward by turning adjusting screw on output shaft support tool, until White or scribed line on tool sleeve begins to disappear. Read resulting end play on indicator.
  3. Rear unit end play should be .004-.025" (.10-.64 mm). If not, selective thrust washer located between front internal gear thrust washer and output shaft snap ring must be changed.
  4. See REAR UNIT SELECTIVE THRUST WASHERΒ  . Install correct thickness thrust washer (with I.D. number toward front of case). Reinstall output shaft snap ring making sure it is fully seated in groove.
  5. Remove dial indicator assembly and loosen adjusting screw on output shaft support tool. Install output shaft-to-turbine shaft front selective thrust washer, locating it on output shaft and retain with petroleum jelly.
