Suspension - Front: Description

1987 Pontiac Firebird Formula, 5.0 H, AutomaticSECTION Description

All models use independent front suspension. Each wheel attaches separately to frame by a steering knuckle, upper and lower control arm, and ball joint assembly. Camaro and Firebird use a steering knuckle, strut assembly, lower ball joint and lower control arm.

Steering linkage and knuckles hold front wheels in proper relation. Lower control arm inner ends connect to the frame with rubber pivot bushings and outer ends connect to steering knuckle with a ball joint. Upper control arm inner ends attach to pivot shaft, which bolts to frame. Upper control arm outer ends attach to steering knuckle with a ball joint. Steering knuckles on Camaro and Firebird connect to the strut.

The stabilizer bar, which is supported by brackets at each frame side rail (forward of springs), controls suspension side roll. Stabilizer bar ends connect to lower control arms. Coil springs, around shock absorbers, mount between each frame side rail or crossmember and lower control arm.
