Removal & Installation: Removal
1984 Pontiac Firebird Base, 5.0 H, AutomaticSECTION Removal
- On Chevette and T1000, remove floor console and/or boot retainer. Raise shift boot to gain access to lock nut on shift lever. Loosen lock nut and unscrew upper portion of shift lever. Remove foam insulator, shifter-to-extension bolts, and remove shifter assembly.
- On Camaro and Firebird, remove shift lever boot attaching screws and slide boot up shift lever. Remove shift lever from transmission. On 76mm 4-Speed transmission, disconnect shifter support and shifter linkage at shifter.
- On Corvette, remove air cleaner, TV cable at left TBI unit and distributor cap. Raise vehicle. Remove complete exhaust system as an assembly. Disconnect overdrive cooler lines. Disconnect TV cable from overdrive unit.
- On all models, disconnect battery ground cable and release parking brake. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission lubricant. On Camaro and Firebird, remove rear axle torque arm. On all models, remove drive shaft assembly and mark for reassembly reference.
- Disconnect clutch return spring and clutch release fork (except Corvette, Camaro, or Firebird with 76mm 4-speed transmission). Disconnect electrical connections at transmission. Remove crossmember-to-transmission bolts. Remove exhaust manifold nuts. Remove catalytic converter-to-tailpipe nuts and bolts.
- Remove converter assembly from vehicle. Raise transmission with a floor jack to take pressure off crossmember. Remove crossmember from vehicle. Remove clutch dust cover.
- Support Engine on Corvette models. Remove transmission attaching bolts. Slide transmission rearward and remove from under vehicle.
