Power Steering Pump - SAGINAW & ZF: Description

1990 Plymouth Laser RS, 2.0 R, StandardSECTION Description

Two kinds of power steering pumps are used, Saginaw and ZF. The ZF pump is non-serviceable. If the pump, reservoir or cap fails or leaks, it should be replaced.

All Saginaw pumps are similar and are overhauled in the same manner. The Saginaw vane power steering pump is a constant displacement, vane type pump with either an integral or remote fluid reservoir. Shaft-driven pumping vanes move the fluid. When pressure exceeds set limits, the flow control pressure relief valve opens and allows fluid to return to the inlet side of the pump. Under normal conditions the pressure relief valve is closed.
