Brake System Warning Light

1989 Plymouth Sundance Base, 2D Hatchback, 2.5 K, Standard, A525SECTION Brake System Warning Light
  1. The brake system warning light should only illuminate when the parking brake is applied with the ignition switch in the "ON" position, or if one of the 2 service brake systems fail when brake pedal is applied.
  2. Turn ignition switch to the "ON" position. DO NOTΒ  start engine. Apply parking brake. If brake warning light fails to go on, check for a burned out bulb, a disconnected socket, or a broken or disconnected wire at brake switch.
  3. Release parking brake. Warning light should go out. If light stays on, check brake system for leaks, grounded wires, shorted parking brake warning switch, or faulty brake warning switch in service brake warning system.
  4. To test service brake warning system, raise and support vehicle on a hoist and open a brake wheel cylinder bleed screw while an assistant depresses the brake pedal and observes the warning light. Brake warning light should illuminate.
  5. If brake warning light fails to illuminate, check for burned out bulb, disconnected socket, or check for broken or disconnected wire at the brake warning light switch. Brake warning light switch is on the brake line "T" fitting mounted on the frame rail in engine compartment.
  6. If bulb is not burned out and wire continuity is okay, replace brake warning switch in the brake line "T" fitting.
CAUTION: If wheel cylinder bleeder has been opened, ensure that brake system has been bled properly and that master cylinder brake fluid level is correct.
