Security Indicator Operation
1998 Oldsmobile Aurora V8-4.0L VIN CSECTION Security Indicator Operation
when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, the SECURITY indicator illuminates for approximately 5 seconds, indicating to the driver that the system is operating correctly.
The four indicator control modes for the PASS-Key(R) II system are listed below:
^ Indicator Illuminates When the Ignition Switch is Turned to RUN (5 second bulb check), this indicates that the indicator and system are operating correctly.
^ Indicator Illuminates After the Engine Starts, if the SECURITY indicator stays illuminated after the engine starts, this is an indication that one of the following conditions has occurred:
- The PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module is not properly programmed, more than one key code value can be used to start the vehicle. The improperly programmed module condition usually occurs on a vehicle where the module has been recently replaced.
- The PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module detected a malfunction in the PASS-Key(R) II system while the engine was running. Verify that the PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module connections are secure and that a good ignition key is being used.
^ Indicator is Illuminated and the Engine does not Start, if the SECURITY indicator stays illuminated while attempting to start the engine and the engine does not start, the PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module has detected an incorrect key pellet resistance (key code) value and activated the system disable functions. The following actions should be taken:
1. Remove the key from the ignition.
2. Verify that the correct key code (key pellet) is being used to start the vehicle. Using a J 35628-A, measure each key pellet for the vehicle, all the key codes should match.
3. Wait approximately 3 minutes for the system disable timer to expire, attempt to restart the engine using a known good key with the correct key code.
4. If the engine still won't start, refer to Theft Deterrent System Check.
^ Indicator Flashes and the Engine does not Start, if the SECURITY indicator flashes and the engine does riot start, the PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module has detected an open or short in the ignition key resistor input circuit. During this mode of operation the PASS-Key(R) II theft deterrent module does not start the system disable timer. Refer to the System Check.
