Brake Fluid Is Low

1991 Oldsmobile Toronado V6-3800 3.8LSECTION Brake Fluid Is Low

Brake Switch Circuit:

DESCRIPTION:

The BCM provides system voltage to the brake fluid level circuit, and the brake fluid level switch provides the single path to ground. The BCM supplies and internally monitors the voltage level of the circuit at pin 3C12. When the brake fluid level circuit is open the BCM detects system voltage, but if the brake fluid level switch provides a path to ground (low brake fluid level in the reservoir), the BCM will detect low voltage. Once the BCM has determined that all the of the failure conditions have been met, it will send the "BRAKE FLUID LOW" message to the IPC. The BCM will also illuminate the "BRAKE" indicator on the IPC and will activate the fast paced chime on the chime module.

TEST CONDITIONS:

Ignition is "ON."

FAILURE CONDITIONS:

Brake fluid level is low for at least 5.0 seconds.

ACTION TAKEN:

1. Display the "BRAKE FLUID LOW" message on the IPC.
2. Illuminate the "BRAKE" indicator light on the IPC.
3. Activate the fast paced chime on the chime module.

DIAGNOSIS:

Erroneous message - Short to ground on circuit 33 or shorted switch.

No message - Open in circuit 33, open in switch, or open in ground circuit.
RENDER: 1.0x

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
