DTC DETECTION LOGIC

DTC CONSULT screen terms (Trouble diagnosis content) DTC detection condition
P0021-00 INT/V TIM CONT-B2 ("A" camshaft position - timing over-advanced or system performance bank 2) A Diagnosis condition
  • Ignition switch: ON
  • Engine speed: 1, 200 - 3, 175 RPM
  • Engine coolant temperature: 60 - 120°C (140 - 248°F)
  • Battery voltage: 11 - 16 V
Signal (terminal) -
Threshold During the advanced control of intake valve timing control, the angle difference between actual angle and target angle is 13 degrees or more
Diagnosis delay time 6 seconds
B Diagnosis condition
  • Ignition switch: ON
  • Engine speed: 500 - 2, 000 RPM [when vehicle speed is less than 4 km/h (2.5 MPH)]
  • Engine speed: 1, 200 - 2, 000 RPM [when vehicle speed is 4 km/h (2.5 MPH) or more]
  • Engine coolant temperature: 60 - 120°C (140 - 248°F)
  • Battery voltage: 11 - 16 V
Signal (terminal) -
Threshold During the advanced control of intake valve timing control, the absolute difference between valve timing control reference position and base angle is 13 degrees or more
Diagnosis delay time 3 seconds

POSSIBLE CAUSE

Malfunction A

  • Electric intake valve timing (IVT) control actuator (bank 2)
  • Harness and connectors [Electric IVT control actuator (bank 2) motor control circuit is open or shorted.]
  • Foreign matter caught at the electric IVT control actuator (bank 2)

Malfunction B

  • Timing chain installation
  • Intake camshaft sprocket (bank 2) wear

FAIL-SAFE

Engine Control System

Fail safe mode Vehicle behavior
Device fix mode
  • Fixes electric intake valve timing control motor in the reference position.
  • Fixes exhaust valve timing control solenoid valve in the reference position.
  • The Intake manifold runner control valve motor is turned OFF (Intake manifold runner control valve opens).
Others ECM stops the electric valve timing control. (The camshaft returns to the position of most retard angle.)
NOTE: SYMBOL When VTC mechanism sticks, camshaft position does not change from position of stuck angle.

Idle Start/Stop System

When a DTC is detected, the start/stop indicator lamp blinks slowly and the idle start/stop system operation is prohibited. When ECM detects error while operating the idle start/stop system, ECM restarts the engine.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
