Functional description solar sensor for IHKA
As part of climate control, the solar sensor takes into consideration external light and heat sources that influence the climate in the vehicle interior. The solar sensor consists of one Photo-resistor that measures the varying intensity of solar radiation. At high levels of solar radiation, the setting of the air conditioning system is correspondingly adapted to requirements.
The following settings are varied:
Blower - The blower curve is changed
Stratification - The stratification air temperature is changed
Ventilation flaps - The angles of the ventilation flaps are changed
The signal of the solar sensor is generated in the solar sensor module. The sensor signal is output in a voltage range of 0....5V. A value outside the limits indicates a malfunction and the influence of the sensor is completely suppressed.
Restrictions:
- E46/R50 Only one solar sensor is fitted. Stratification is not affected.
- E38/E39 Two sensors are fitted in the solar sensor housing, aligned to the left and right.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- β’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- β’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- β’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- β’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- β’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
