P0116 - ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR 1 CIRCUIT RANGE/PERFORMANCE

Description:  Indicates the engine coolant temperature rationality test has failed. The powertrain control module (PCM) logic that sets this DTC indicates the engine coolant temperature (ECT) or cylinder head temperature (CHT) drifted higher than the nominal sensor calibration curve and could prevent one or more on-board diagnostic (OBD) monitors from executing.
The PCM runs this logic after an engine off calibrated soak period (typically 6 hours). This soak period allows the intake air temperature (IAT) and engine coolant temperature to stabilize and not differ by more than a calibrated value.
Possible Causes:
  • CHT
  • Coolant system concern
Diagnostic Aids:  Make sure the IAT and the engine coolant temperature are similar when the engine is cold. Also make sure the CHT sensor and the actual engine operating temperatures are the same.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
