NOTE: After each service or repair procedure has been completed, reconnect all components. Clear DTCs and repeat QUICK TEST procedures to ensure all EEC-V systems are working properly and DTCs are no longer present.

Perform this test when directed by QUICK TEST. This test is intended to diagnose the following:

  • Generator/Regulator
  • Wiring Harness Circuits (GEN-MON, GEN-COM & BATT-SENSE)
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

NOTE: Proceed to DTC testing steps listed in FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITIONΒ  table of fault code setting condition.
FAULT CODE SETTING CONDITION

Fault Code KOEO KOER Continuous Memory
P1246 Β  Β HY1 Β HY1

  1. 1) KOER & Continuous Memory DTC P1246: Verify Generator Drive Function

This DTC is set when PCM detects voltage regulator temperature (calculated generator load frequency) falls below 6 percent. Possible causes are:
    • Generator Circuit Open, Or Shorted To GND Or PWR
    • FaultyGenerator Drive Mechanism
    • Faulty Generator/Regulator Assembly
    • Faulty PCM

Check generator drive belt condition and tension. Start engine and verify generator is turning. Repair as necessary. See appropriate GENERATORS & REGULATORS article in STARTING & CHARGING SYSTEMS. If no faults are found, go to next step.

  2. 2) Verify Charging System Is EEC Controlled

Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect negative then positive battery cable. Disconnect generator connector. Using a DVOM, measure resistance between generator connector BATT-SENSE and GEN-COM terminals. See Fig 1-Fig 3 . If resistance is 950-1050 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 950-1050 ohms, replace generator/regulator assembly.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • β€’ You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • β€’ Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • β€’ The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • β€’ You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • β€’ You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
