- Inspect fuses, connections, and wiring. Repair any obvious defects. If all are okay, go to next step.
- Connect New Generation Star (NGS) tester to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located under left side of instrument panel, next to steering column. Following NGS tester manufacturer's instructions, retrieve continuous DTC's. Perform ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST
. If no DTC exists, inspect Dark Blue/Orange and White wires between HI-LO relay and wiper motor for defects. Repair wiring as necessary. If DTCs exist, perform the following:
- If DTC B1431 B1446, B1476, B1473 or B1446 exists, go to next step.
- If DTC B1438 or B1450 exists, go to step 5).
- If DTC B1431, B1432, B1446 B1476 or B1465 exists, repair short to voltage on Yellow/White wire between GEM and run relay. Run relay is located at left rear of engine compartment.
- If DTC B1431, B1434, B1458 B1446, B1476, or B1473 exists, go to step 8).
- If DTC B1450 or B1438 exists, inspect for open in wiring between wiper switch and ground. Repair as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- If DTC B1446, B1840, B1473 or B1476 exists, go to step 10).
- If DTC B1446, B1476, B1473, and possibly B1448 exists, temporarily substitute a known-good wiper HI-LO relay. HI-LO relay is located at left rear of engine compartment. Retest system.
- Disconnect negative battery terminal. Inspect for open Red wire between run relay and fuse panel. Repair Red wire as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect for open in run relay coil. See WIRING DIAGRAM . Replace relay if defective, then go to next step. If relay is okay, repair open Yellow/White wire between GEM and run relay.
- Unplug wiper switch. Test for battery voltage on Pink/Yellow wire at harness connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair short in Pink/Yellow wire between GEM and wiper switch.
- Using NGS tester, access WPMODE PID from PID/DATA monitor menu. Connect Pink/Yellow wire at wiper switch harness connector to ground. If NGS tester indicates HIGH, go to next step. If NGS tester does not indicate HIGH, repair open in Pink/Yellow wire between GEM and wiper switch.
- Test Light Blue/Orange wire at wiper switch connector for continuity to ground. If continuity exists, replace wiper switch, then go to next step. If continuity does not exist, repair open Light in Blue/Orange wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Inspect fuse No. 16 (30-amp). If fuse is okay, go to next step. If fuse is blown, inspect for short in Red wire between fuse panel and wiper motor. Repair as necessary.
- Inspect for short in Dark Blue/Orange wire between HI-LO relay and wiper motor. If wire is okay, inspect for short in circuit between run relay and HI-LO relay. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Disconnect negative battery terminal. Inspect for open in Red wire between run relay and HI-LO relay. Repair Red wire as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Test Black/Pink wire at run relay for continuity to ground. If continuity does not exist, go to next step. If continuity exists, repair short in Black/Pink wire. See WIRING DIAGRAM .
- Inspect for open in Black wire between wiper motor and run relay. Repair Black wire as necessary. If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Inspect for open in Black wire between wiper motor and ground. Repair Black wire as necessary. See WIRING DIAGRAM . If wire is okay, go to next step.
- Connect negative battery terminal. Connect NGS tester. Run wiper control functional test with NGS tester. Energize run relay. If wipers do not work, go to next step. If wipers work, no problem is indicated at this time. Inspect wiring and connectors for intermittent contact and repair as necessary.
- Check wiper motor. See WIPER MOTOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If faulty, replace wiper motor. If motor is good, replace run relay. Retest system.

When to See a Mechanic
Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:
- • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
- • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
- • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
- • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
- • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
