Steering Gear Overhaul: Disassembly

1991 Mercury Tracer Base, 4D Sedan, AutomaticSECTION Disassembly
  1. Support steering gear in a soft-jawed vise. Loosen tie rod lock nuts, and remove tie rod ends and lock nuts. Remove boot wires and clips off ends of boots. Slide boots off tie rods. Using hammer and chisel, lift tabs on washers securing tie rods. Unscrew and remove tie rods. See Figure.
  2. Remove mounting brackets and rubber insulators from steering gear housing. Left and right mounting brackets and insulators are not interchangeable. Remove pinion seal protector from housing. Using care not to score pinion shaft, remove pinion seal using screwdriver or suitable remover. Remove spacer.
  3. Remove pinion bearing snap ring. Using Bridge (T90P-3504-GH) and Pulling Screw (T78P-3504-B), remove pinion and bearing assembly. See Fig 1.
  4. Remove adjusting bolt lock nut, adjusting bolt and yoke plug. Remove spring, spacer and support yoke. Remove rack by pulling from left end of housing. See Figure.
    CAUTION: DO NOT remove or install rack through right end of housing. Rack teeth may damage rack bushing.
  5. Depress bushing lock tabs through slots on housing. Remove rack support bushing from right end of steering gear housing.
