DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION AND CORRECTION
In-use studies conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency show that some of the described vehicles may be emitting unacceptable emissions levels. To correct this condition, the following service procedures are to be performed on all returned vehicles.
^ All 1981-model 49-State 5.0L engine-equipped vehicles will be inspected for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve function. Non-functioning valves will be replaced.
^ All vehicles will have a vacuum switch assembly adjusted to a new setting.
^ Certain engine calibrations will require either the replacement of existing vacuum retard delay valves or installation of such valves in the air control valve and/or air bypass valve vacuum hoses.
^ All serviced vehicles will require installation of Authorized Modifications decals. Vehicles having new vacuum retard delay valves installed must also have new Vehicle Emission Control Information (VECI) decals. The VECI decals for vehicles involved in this action are being sent directly to the owners. Owners are requested to bring the decals with their vehicles when this service is scheduled to the performed.
Each VECI decal will have a vehicle identification number (VIN) printed on it. If it is necessary to get additional decals, contact your FPSD District Office and provide the VIN for each vehicle requiring a decal.
^ All service stock of certain vacuum switch assemblies is to be returned for credit. Refer to RETURN OF DEALER SERVICE STOCK in this bulletin for instructions.
