Turn key on, but do not start engine. Watch voltmeter for code pulses which should appear in approximately 5 seconds. Ignore any initial surge of voltage when key is turned on. Record code (s).

NOTE: If voltmeter does not pulse, but shows steady high or low readings, see test 14 (4 and 6 cylinder) or 29 (V8).
