Radio reception, function

After the radio menu has been activated by operating the "FM/AM" button on the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), the antennas in the rear window receive frequency-modulated (FM) and amplitude-modulated (AM) high frequency (HF) signals. The music, speech and data signals are modulated upon these high-frequency signals. The amplifier module 2, window antenna (A2/72) and the amplifier module 3, window antenna (A2/73) filter the frequencies of the radio frequency bands out of the high-frequency signals received and amplify them. The amplified high-frequency signals are then transferred via a shared coaxial line (FM, AM) to the radio receiver (is integrated into the control). The radio receiver demodulates the high frequency signals, in other words it separates the useful information (audible frequencies) from the carrier signal (inaudible).

The demodulated audio signals are amplified and converted to sound signals by the vehicle speakers.

The radio system also offers the option of receiving regional supplemental information via the weather band (WB) channel (e.g. weather forecasts, weather warnings, warnings of other dangers).

FM antenna diversity, function

In the case of the "antenna diversity" function, reception-dependent switching over is carried out between the FM antennas of the rear window. The function runs automatically and is executed by the amplifier module 2, window antenna (A2/72) and the amplifier module 3, window antenna (A2/73).

The radio receiver in the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) only generates the intermediate frequency (ZF) signal, which serves the amplifier module 2, window antenna (A2/72) and the amplifier module 3, window antenna (A2/73) as a reference for switching the FM antenna.

Station selection options:

  • Automatic station search with "scan" function (the stations of one waveband are played for 8 s)
  • station search at the multifunction steering wheel (MFL)
  • Manual station search
  • Station selection with station list
  • Station selection with keypad
  • Station selection with frequency input
  • station selection from the memory (10 stations per waveband)

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
