The voice control system (VCS) is activated by pulling the VCS switch (S93/2) toward the driver.

The actuator signal is read in by the steering column module (N80) and the corresponding message is transmitted on the Controller Area Network bus Class B (interior) (CAN-B) to the following control unit of the particular audio system:

  • Radio (A2), with code (523) MB Audio 20 radio
  • Radio and navigation unit (A2/56), with code (525) MB Audio 50 APS radio
  • COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3), with code (527a) COMAND APS (with navigation)

It then transmits the actuation message via the MOST (Media Oriented System Transport) to the voice control system control unit (A35/11), which activates the integrated voice recognition of the voice control system (VCS). This is announced to the user through an acoustic signal (beep). Simultaneously, the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) is activated and the radio component of the audio system is muted to ensure the greatest possible stability of user input.

The user can select and operate the particular component of the audio, communications and navigation system with the appropriate input commands.

The spoken commands are received by the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) and transmitted conventionally to the voice control system control unit (A35/11). This system processes the voice input of the user while taking the ambient noise into account (e.g., wind noise, tire rolling noise). If there is no immediate input, then the sensitivity of the hands-free system microphone group (A67/b1) is increased. If there still is no entry, the voice control system (VCS) is deactivated after t = 15 s.

Accepting call 

An incoming call can be accepted via the accept/terminate phone call button (S111s3) at the multifunction steering wheel (MFL). As with the activation of the voice control system (VCS), the radio component of the audio system is also muted here to ensure the greatest possible stability of the user voice input.

It is also possible for the user to use the hands-free system microphone group (A67b1) for the call.

The voice output of the voice control system (VCS) is accomplished via the following speakers of the audio system:

  • Loudspeaker Left front door (H4/1)
  • Loudspeaker Right front door (H4/2)
  • Speaker left rear door (H4/5), on model 203.0/2
  • Speaker group left rear door (H4/5), with code (810) sound system
  • Rear speaker, left door (H4/5), on model 203.7
  • Speaker right rear door (H4/6), on model 203.0/2
  • Speaker group right rear door (H4/6), with code (810) sound system
  • Rear speaker, right door (H4/6), on model 203.7
  • Bass module speaker (H4/17), with code (810) sound system
  • Left front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/23), on model 203.0/2
  • Left front door mirror triangle speaker (H4/23), on model 203.7
  • Right front door speaker, mirror triangle (H4/24), on model 203.0/2
  • Right front door mirror triangle speaker (H4/24), on model 203.7
  • Center cockpit speaker (centerfill) (H4/27), with code (810) sound system

For echo compensation, the voice control system (VCS) requires the data from the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system that are provided to the voice control system (VCS) via the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). The processed and digitized microphone data are read in by the voice control system (VCS) and provided on the Media Oriented System Transport (MOST). They can be read in by the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) control unit (N123/1).

IMPORTANT In order to achieve a very good hands-free call quality, the Universal Portable CTEL Interface (UPCI) system has to switch off its own hands-free call processes (echo compensation, noise compensation, and noise reduction).
