The navigation services provided by the navigation system (based on the data on the compact disk (CD)) are supported by the following basic voice outputs:

  • Direction information
  • Name of the street where the next turn should be made

IMPORTANT As of 1.6.01; indication of compass direction (North, South, East and West). No compass direction is specified in the case of streets which are designated by a name (e.g. in cities).

The voice data are originally stored on the navigation CD as individual word segments. This data record is automatically transferred from the CD to the navigation processor and stored there. The navigation processor of the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) connects these words segments to form complete instructions or information and generates corresponding audio frequency (AF) signals. These audio frequency signals are transferred internally to the audio signal processor as required and (with code (810) sound system) then transmitted over the digital data bus (D2B) to the sound amplifier (A2/13).

There the signals are amplified and then output through the vehicle speakers.

IMPORTANT Several driving recommendations in quick succession are combined into a single voice output.

Manual language loading from the CD

The COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) has the following languages available:

  • German
  • British English
  • American English
  • French
  • Spanish
  • Italian
  • Dutch
  • Swedish
  • Danish
  • Portuguese

They can be selected with the "System settings" menu. The voice output data are then automatically sent from the CD to the navigation processor and stored in its non-volatile memory.

IMPORTANT Loading a language requires several seconds and changes the voice output as well as the menu texts on the display. Voice loading takes place again automatically after a power disconnection.

IMPORTANT While a language is being loaded from the CD, severe vibrations (e.g. bad road conditions) should be avoided. Otherwise the voice output might be broken up. In such cases it is necessary to reload the language.

Voice output superimposed with another audio source

When voice output is active simultaneously with an audio source (e.g. CD, radio), the two signal sources are superimposed.

Voice output volume

The voice output volume can be adjusted during voice output. A definable interval is maintained automatically between the volume of the current audio source and the volume of the voice output (interval can be changed in "Settings" menu).

The audio volume is turned down during voice output. If the specified volume difference to the audio signal is not attained, the COMAND operating, display and control unit (A40/3) then decreases the level of the audio signal until the specified volume difference is again attained. After voice output has taken place, the volume of the audio signal is increased to match that of the voice output. The volume of the voice output cannot be reduced to below a certain minimum level.

Voice output mute circuit

The navigation voice output can be muted by pressing the "MUTE" button during a voice output. The mute feature applies only for the current voice output. If an audio source (CD, radio, etc.) can be heard at the same time as the navigation voice output, the first press of the mute button mutes the navigation voice output, and the second press mutes all audio output.

When to See a Mechanic

Stop DIY work and contact a certified mechanic immediately if any of the following apply:

  • You smell fuel, burning insulation, or see smoke.
  • Brakes feel soft, pull hard to one side, or make grinding noises.
  • The engine overheats, stalls repeatedly, or misfires under load.
  • You are missing required tools, torque specs, or safe lifting equipment.
  • You are not confident in the next step or safety outcome.
