Flywheel Inspection

2013 Mazda 3 Mazdaspeed, 2.3L Eng VIN 3SECTION Flywheel Inspection

  1. Perform the following procedures.
    1. Remove the battery cover. (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.0, MZR 2.5] .)
    2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    3. Remove the battery component. (ex: battery, battery tray and PCM component) (See BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 2.0, MZR 2.5] .)
    4. Remove the air cleaner component. (See INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    5. Remove the exhaust manifold insulator installation bolts and set the exhaust manifold insulator aside.
    6. Remove the exhaust manifold bracke. (See EXHAUST SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    7. Remove the front splash shield. (See SPLASH SHIELD REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    8. Remove the aerodynamic under cover No.2. (See AERODYNAMIC UNDER COVER NO.2 REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    9. Remove the starter. (See STARTER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    10. Drain the transaxle oil into a suitable container. (See TRANSAXLE OIL REPLACEMENT .)
    11. Remove the manual transaxle. (See MANUAL TRANSAXLE REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
    12. Remove the clutch cover and clutch disc. (See CLUTCH UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  2. Measure the runout of the surface that contacts the clutch disc using a dial gauge.

    Flywheel maximum runout 

    • 0.1 mm {0.004 in}
  3. Remove the flywheel. (See CLUTCH UNIT REMOVAL/INSTALLATION .)
  4. Inspect the ring gear teeth for damage and wear.
  5. Inspect the surface that contacts the clutch disc for scratches, nicks, and discoloration.
    1. If there is any malfunction, correct slight scratches and discoloration using sandpaper.

  6. Measure the flatness of the flywheel with a straight edge and a feeler gauge.

    • If there is any malfunction, replace the flywheel.

    Maximum clearance of flatness of the flywheel 

    • 0.06 mm {0.002 in}
